New Toddler Group
Butterflies & Caterpillars
St George’s School Windsor Castle is proud to announce the launch of a new Parent and Toddler Group – Butterflies and Caterpillars
Caterpillars and Butterflies is aimed at children aged 18 months to three years. We hope that it will provide a welcome opportunity for parents and carers to get together with their young children each week to connect, learn through play and, most importantly, very importantly, enjoy themselves. Parent and toddler groups are often one of the first and most important social networks for children and families.
So what benefits are there to attending a parent and toddler group? The most obvious benefit is that parents have the opportunity to introduce their children to a wide range of activities they may not be able to do at home. It also provides a safe way for parents to allow their children to engage socially with other people and try new things.
Every child is different. Some may be social butterflies while others prefer to play alone. Each child has their own approach towards developing their social skills. Butterflies and Caterpillars at St George’s is about following the lead of the child, allowing children to develop their social skills at their own pace.
A major benefit of a Toddler group is to build a child’s emotional confidence as they attend, assisted by their parent or carer. From an emotional point of view, this strengthens the relationship between the child and their carer, because it creates a shared experience. At the same time, children start to meet new people allowing a safe test of separation from their carer. This is very important for building confidence in children, encouraging them to be independent from an early age.
Butterflies and Caterpillars aims to encourage physical activity. Moulding playdough, running, jumping, singing and more! There are also opportunities for children to develop their fine motor skills through puzzles, craft and playing with toys.
Role play develops children’s imaginations and puts them in real-life situations where they need to solve problems and think of solutions. It allows children to make sense of situations, understand what is happening around them and what these experiences mean for them. Parent and toddler groups are the perfect place to bring more characters into a child’s expansive world, allowing them to be active learners and thinkers right from the start.
Caterpillars and Butterflies will aim to support imagination and creativity by allowing and encouraging the children to play in an unstructured way. Children will be able to dress-up or develop play scenarios with dolls, Small World, Duplo and other toys. Creative thinking is of key importance as this skill will be needed for future generations to be successful in their personal and professional lives.
